CIJ Cabinet Overheating: Fan or Restricted Airflow?

Published by UPLIMARK

A CIJ cabinet temperature alarm does not, by itself, prove the cooling fan has failed. First record the alarm and operating conditions, check externally accessible ventilation for obstruction, and have a qualified technician distinguish restricted airflow from a fan, power or control problem.

This general evidence-gathering guide applies to continuous inkjet printers that use fan-assisted cabinet cooling. Cooling arrangements differ; use the applicable equipment manual for operating limits, access permissions and service procedures.

Start with the conditions around the cabinet

Record when the alarm appeared: after relocation, after filter service, during a hotter shift or after a change in nearby equipment. Note the displayed temperature if provided and the ambient temperature measured at the location specified by the manufacturer. Do not compare a room-wall reading with a cabinet-inlet limit as though they were the same measurement.

From outside the closed cabinet, look for packaging, stored items or other equipment obstructing the intended inlet or outlet. Photograph the installation and note nearby heat sources. Check required clearances against the manual; there is no universal clearance or temperature limit for every CIJ printer.

Separate observations from conclusions

Observation What it may justify checking What it does not prove
Alarm starts after the cabinet is moved Installation clearance, airflow path and nearby heat That the fan motor has failed
Accessible intake or filter looks obstructed The specified filter inspection and service procedure That replacing the fan will restore cooling
Fan appears stationary Whether the fan should run in that operating state, then its supply and control A failed fan without checking operating logic
Fan rotates but the alarm persists Airflow direction, restrictions, heat load and temperature sensing Adequate cooling simply because blades move

Keep the cabinet closed during normal operation

Do not use an open cabinet door, removed filter or bypassed alarm as a permanent cooling solution. These changes can defeat the intended protection and airflow arrangement. If the equipment reaches its specified stop condition, follow the manufacturer's shutdown procedure and escalate the fault.

Internal inspection, electrical measurements and fan removal require the applicable shutdown and isolation procedure and competent personnel. Do not put fingers or tools into a moving fan. This guide provides no live electrical test points or model-specific wiring instructions.

If replacement is justified, match the complete fan specification

Send the installed label and equipment revision to the supplier. Confirm voltage and electrical rating, connector and pin assignment, lead length, frame size, depth, mounting holes and airflow direction. Where present, speed-feedback or control connections also matter. Equal dimensions or wire colours do not establish an electrical match.

Ask whether the quote includes the bare fan, guard, bracket, connector adapter or complete assembly. Do not substitute a higher-speed fan merely because it fits: the required cooling performance and control behaviour must be confirmed for the equipment.

Document the result after authorized service

Record the fitted reference and the work performed. Verify the specified airflow arrangement, guards, filters and cabinet closures are restored. Observe the printer under representative operating conditions using the manual's acceptance criteria. An alarm disappearing briefly at idle is not evidence that cooling is adequate during normal production.

Frequently asked questions

Does a spinning fan rule out a cooling problem?

No. Rotation alone does not establish adequate airflow or correct direction, and the remaining cooling path still matters.

Can I order by fan dimensions alone?

No. Electrical rating, connector pin assignment, control features, airflow requirements and the installed reference also need checking.

What information makes a service request useful?

Provide the exact alarm, timing, installation photos, relevant temperature readings, recent changes, fan label and any qualified technician's findings.

Send a fan compatibility or parts inquiry with the label, connector and mounting photographs. See the compatibility and ordering guide for order preparation and the CIJ restart checklist when the problem follows a long shutdown.
