When a continuous inkjet (CIJ) code moves from its normal position, check the printhead mounting, product presentation and trigger conditions before buying replacement parts. A shifted code does not, by itself, prove that the printhead or its holder has failed.
This guide helps maintenance teams collect useful evidence. It is not a substitute for the equipment-specific installation and safety instructions. The featured photograph shows an example holder from our parts catalogue, not a universal fit or a diagnosed repair.
Start with the pattern, not the parts list
Keep several consecutive printed samples and note the job, line speed, product format and when the change began. A consistent offset, irregular movement and a distorted character are different observations. Record which one you see before changing print delay, bracket position or other settings.
Compare against the last accepted sample. If the issue appeared after a format change or maintenance stop, record exactly what was moved or changed. Do not reset several variables at once: that makes it harder to identify which change matters.
Separate three lines of investigation
| Observation | Evidence to collect | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Code height or angle has shifted | Printhead orientation, holder position and product presentation compared with the approved setup | That the internal printhead parts need replacing |
| Start position varies along the direction of travel | Product spacing, trigger arrangement and speed-synchronization records where applicable | That the external mount is the only cause |
| Characters appear wavy or distorted | Printed samples and any observable vibration or changes in the product path | A specific component failure without further diagnosis |
Inspect the mount safely
Keep hands, tools and measuring devices outside moving machinery. Stop and isolate equipment according to the site and equipment procedures before physically checking a holder, fastener or cable support. Do not reach into a running line to test whether a bracket is loose.
A qualified person can compare the assembly with the approved installation: mounting surfaces, clamps, fasteners, orientation, clearances and support points. Look for evidence of movement or damage rather than assuming that extra tightening is the answer. Use the specified fasteners and tightening requirements; this article supplies no universal torque value.
Check whether the printhead cable or umbilical is supported as intended and whether its routing changes the load on the holder during normal machine movement. Do not use it to support the printhead. Any correction must preserve the required bend limits, access and guarding.
Check the product path before changing the print gap
Variation in product position can change where a non-contact code lands even if the holder has not moved. Review guides, presentation and the approved printhead-to-product geometry with the line team. Record the actual arrangement and compare it with the applicable specification; do not copy a distance from a different printer or package.
Likewise, a timing or detection issue will not necessarily be cured by a different bracket. If the mount is sound, take the samples and operating observations to the technician responsible for triggering and speed synchronization.
When a replacement holder is justified
Order against a confirmed reference and mechanical interface. Supply the equipment revision, photographs of the installed holder and its mounting points, the approved dimensions and required orientation. Confirm the supplied scope: holder, clamp, shaft, fasteners and adapters may be separate items.
Ask whether the proposed part preserves adjustment range, service access and clearance to the product. A similar-looking metal block is not evidence of interchangeability. After an authorized repair or adjustment, validate print position and readability under the approved production test conditions before releasing the line.
Frequently asked questions
Should I increase print delay to correct every shifted code?
No. First establish whether the problem concerns timing, physical position or product presentation. Record existing settings before an authorized change.
Does a stable bracket rule out vibration?
No. The product and other parts of the installation can still move. Observe the whole approved printing arrangement, not only the holder.
Can a photograph confirm replacement compatibility?
A photo supports identification but does not replace the part reference, dimensions and application review.
Send a mounting-part identification request with the installed reference and clear interface photographs. Use our compatibility and ordering guide to prepare the details before approving a substitute.
